Essential Fir needle oil production

Natural essential fir needle oil is a raw material for pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. The main source of fir needle oil is Siberian firs (Abies Sibirica) which appear to be the most widely-spread among all fir species growing on the territory of Russia. The very fir species have the highest parameters for bornyl acetate content in its oil.
Fir needle oil production process consists of the following levels:

1. Process of fir needles storage.

Fir needles storage is carried out in the forest zones, located in ecological clean regions of Western Siberia. Needles are stored along with twigs which diameter does not exceed 8 mm. Storage process starts from the end of April and up to October. Fir needle oil output and quality parameters depend on many factors including a season. It is not recommended to store needles when it is severe frost as the needles are falling down as well as bornyl acetate content.

2. Steam distillation.

Fir needle oil production is implemented by means of steam distillation on removable and stationary distillation facilities called X80. Intensive fir needle output begins after 30-50 minutes from the start and lasts during 15-17 hours. After fir needle oil is discharged from separating flask, the process of settling is fulfilled. Settling lasts not less than 3 days.

3. Concentration of Essential Fir Needle Oil.

To reach the customer’s requirements on quality, bornyl acetate content increasing process could be initiated. The process is fulfilled by means of vacuum turpentine stripping (easily boiling components of fir needle oil).

4. Fir Needle Oil Filtration.

Fir needle oil is filtered by means of membrane and deep filters made of different filtration materials. It is necessary to use filters made of neutral and inert materials.
Filtration rating (nominal thickness):

1. Preliminary filtration from 5.0 micron to 40.0 micron
2. Finishing filtration from 0.2 micron to 1.0 micron.

5. Physical chemical parameters estimation.

Physical chemical parameters estimation is carried out with the implementation of GLC (gas-liquid chromatography).

6. Storage and transportation.

Fir needle oil is stored in the drums made of food aluminum alloy А5М(GOST 21631). Fir needle oil shelf life is 2 years. During this period safety of all consumer properties is guaranteed.

Fir needle oil transportation is fulfilled in steel drums. The drums capacity is 200 liters with an internal layer RDL 50. The drums are made in accordance with UN recommendations for dangerous goods transporting and storage. Fir needle oil is referred to dangerous goods.
